When I used to teach in my classroom and we had huge budget cuts, the arts ended up falling onto the classroom teacher's lap. Not knowing much technique about art instruction, I decided to at least make it fun until I could do some more research on how to teach the basics. We started by talking about Michelangelo and how he painted the Sistine Chapel on his back. The kids couldn't believe it! They kept telling me that I was kidding them.
Using some pictures that I had printed off I showed them his work.
After a few ahhs, ohhs and wows, I had the kids go to their tables and pull the chairs out. I had already had my staff tape pieces of paper on the underside of the tables. We did three different activities, while painting like Michelangelo. First, we practiced our spelling words, by painting the letters. Then the students did a self portrait and finally they could paint what ever they wanted to.

Since it was such a hit with my students at school, I decided to try it with my kids at home and they loved it just as much!
We started by taping the paper to the bottom of our craft table.

I chose three pieces because they fit nicely and that way the kiddos had plenty of room to paint!
Then they loaded up their paint brushes and got to work!
